In recent days, the situation in the West Bank has significantly worsened, with an accumulation of political and security measures condemned by numerous international organizations. Between a proposed death penalty targeting Palestinians, restrictions against NGOs, and forced displacement, the occupied territory is experiencing a new phase of tension.
A death penalty law exclusively targeting Palestinians
In recent days, the adoption of an Israeli law establishing the death penalty for certain acts described as “terrorist” has sent shockwaves through the West Bank. Palestinian families have expressed their anguish at legislation that could directly affect their imprisoned relatives.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, this bill constitutes a violation of international law and introduces blatant discrimination by de facto targeting Palestinians. Organizations such as Amnesty International also emphasize that, in practice, this measure would apply almost exclusively to Palestinians tried by military courts.
A measure denounced as a political escalation
The debate surrounding capital punishment marks a turning point. Its extension to the occupied territories raises serious concerns. Human rights defenders explain that this law could institutionalize a two-tiered justice system, where Palestinians and Israelis would not be judged by the same rules.
NGOs progressively removed from the field
At the same time, the humanitarian situation is likely to further deteriorate. Israeli authorities plan to ban 37 international humanitarian organizations from operating in Gaza and the West Bank. These NGOs notably refuse to comply with new administrative requirements deemed contrary to the principles of independence and neutrality.
For humanitarian actors, this decision could deprive thousands of Palestinians of vital aid, particularly in the areas of health, food, and psychological support.
Increase in forced displacements
Meanwhile, the United Nations is warning of an increase in forced displacements in the West Bank. More than 36,000 Palestinians have been displaced, amidst military raids, settler violence, and land confiscations.
Some international officials even speak of a risk of "ethnic cleansing," given the accumulation of policies aimed at permanently altering the demographics of the territory.
Growing pressure on the Palestinian population
Between judicial repression, humanitarian restrictions, and territorial pressures, the West Bank today appears as a territory under constant tension. Arrests, military incursions, and violence are increasing, while political prospects remain blocked.
For many observers, all these measures are part of a broader strategy aimed at permanently weakening the Palestinian presence in the territory.
