Doha under fire: diplomacy attacked, conventions violated
An attack on Qatari soil during mediation
On September 9, 2025, Israel struck Doha, Qatar, targeting Hamas leaders meeting to discuss a draft ceasefire. According to AP News, the attack killed five Hamas members and one Qatari security officer.
Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's chief negotiator, was present. His son Humam is among the victims, according to Qatari authorities. This act, described by Doha as "state terrorism," represents a clear violation of sovereignty and international law.
A blatant violation of international law
The UN Security Council, with the support of the United States, condemned this strike, deeming it to severely undermine any peace process. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke of an "unacceptable" act, contrary to the principles of the international community.
Impact on Gaza: deaths, famine, and forced displacement
On the ground, the human cost continues to rise. According to Reuters, the strikes on September 10 and 11 resulted in 34 additional deaths, including seven people seeking food. Since October 2023, more than 64,000 Palestinians have been killed, the majority of whom are women and children, according to Reuters.
Forced displacement continues: 1.3 million people are reportedly still trapped in Gaza City, despite calls for evacuation. Many lack the means to flee, roads are bombed, and southern camps are already overcrowded.
Famine, meanwhile, is hitting hard: health authorities report at least 411 deaths due to starvation, including 142 children, a direct consequence of the blockade and the collapse of basic infrastructure.
