The bombings hit the south of the Gaza Strip and the Al-Shati refugee camp, on the edge of Gaza City (North), a rescue spokesperson said.
Gaza’s civil defense reported on Wednesday, July 9, that 22 people were killed, including six children, in two Israeli airstrikes carried out shortly after midnight on the Palestinian territory devastated by twenty-one months of war.
The new Israeli bombardments hit the south and center of the Gaza Strip, as well as two northern areas, including a refugee camp on the outskirts of Gaza City, Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the first aid organization, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Contacted by AFP, the Israeli army said it was investigating the facts reported by Mr. Bassal.
"The explosion was massive, like an earthquake," Zouhair Joudeh, 40, a resident of the Al-Shati refugee camp, where ten people were killed, including six children, according to civil defense, told AFP by telephone.
"The bodies and remains of the martyrs were scattered," he added. "We don't know when they will strike or why, all we can do is rely on God," commented a neighbor, Abir Charbassi, 36.
A weeping crowd gathered at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City after the strike. The director of this major medical complex, Mohammad Abou Salmiya, announced to journalists on Wednesday morning that it would be "completely out of service in a few hours, due to fuel shortages."
The healthcare system has collapsed in the Palestinian territory due to the Israeli military offensive and restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of goods into the territory.
The other bombing took place in the south of the Palestinian territory, in Al-Mawasi, near Khan Younes. "We are extremely tired. Every day they talk about a ceasefire, but the massacres continue," said Umm Ahmed, amidst overturned makeshift tents.
Several injured children were transported overnight to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younes.
Given the restrictions imposed on the media by Israel in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of access to the field, AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and claims of the various parties.
