Gaza City under fire, the world reacts

Gaza City under fire, the world reacts

The number of the day: 34

Thirty-four Palestinians have been killed in the latest Israeli strikes on Gaza City, according to local health authorities cited by Reuters.

An offensive that spares no civilians

Over the past two days, the Israeli army has intensified bombardments in Gaza City, notably targeting infrastructures it claims hide Hamas networks, as well as residential buildings. Reuters reports that operations aim to dismantle underground tunnels and booby-trapped structures, but the destruction of buildings is escalating.

Meanwhile, neighborhoods like Sheikh Radwan and Tel Al-Hawa are particularly affected, causing panic among residents. Many are attempting to flee south, but the path is fraught with dangers, including continuous bombardments, blocked roads, and lack of water. Reuters specifies that since the beginning of September, over 350,000 people have already left Gaza City, but approximately 600,000 still remain, exposed to the violence.

Demolitions, famine, and accusations of ethnic cleansing

A Reuters investigation highlights that up to 50 towers and large buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged since early August. Among them, the Mushtaha Tower is one of the most striking examples. These demolitions, Reuters reports, raise fears that Gaza City is being turned into a quasi-uninhabitable zone, which, according to the UN human rights office, could amount to a strategy of permanent displacement.

The famine in the northern enclave remains a cause for alarm. Humanitarian convoys are blocked, and the distribution of food and fuel is severely hampered, increasing the risk of a massive food crisis, according to UN agencies cited by Reuters.

The world tenses, decisions multiply

Faced with this escalation, several Western countries are accelerating their recognition of the Palestinian state. Reuters indicates that Portugal announced it would officially recognize Palestine soon, joining a broader movement in Europe.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the ongoing operations in Gaza as “morally, politically and legally intolerable,” denouncing the growing human toll and the absence of a ceasefire, as reported by The Guardian. Several states and human rights organizations are calling for international investigations into alleged war crimes.
