Israel frees nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners: joy, struggles, and challenges

Israel Releases Nearly 2,000 Palestinian Prisoners: Joy, Struggles, and Challenges

On Monday, October 13, 2025, as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Israel released approximately 1,968 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the return of the last 20 living hostages held by Hamas. The news sparked scenes of jubilation in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and refugee camps, according to Courrier International and Le Monde.

Among those released were over 1,700 Gazans detained without charge since the outbreak of the conflict, as well as 250 individuals convicted of "security"-related charges. Some of these detainees will be exiled, while others will return to their homes in the West Bank or East Jerusalem.

Upon their arrival at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, the newly released prisoners were greeted with cheers, surrounded by weeping families, unfurled keffiyehs, and waving flags — all testaments to a collective uprising and national pride despite ongoing suffering.

Reactions, Limitations, and Internal Divisions

Hamas celebrated this release as a political and moral victory, highlighting the central role of negotiations and resistance. For many Palestinians, these released prisoners are heroes, symbols of the struggle, and their return is another brick in the edifice of collective memory.

However, critical voices are being raised. The President of the Palestinian Authority denounced that major names — among them Marwan Barghouti, an emblematic figure of Palestinian nationalism — were not included in the list of those released. There is also a quiet anger: some released individuals were directly expelled to Egypt, without even being able to return to their territory, which is a reminder that liberation is often conditional.

What This Will Change — And What Remains to Be Done

- Symbolically, a breath of hope
The return of nearly 2,000 prisoners revives the morale of a struggling population. It is a strong political victory for the Palestinian movement: proof that negotiations, even opaque ones, can lead to humanitarian gestures.

- Increased diplomatic pressure
This release strengthens the weight of the truce agreement. The signatories of the peace plan now have more allies to demand the implementation of other components (reopening of crossings, reconstruction, governance).

- Fighting arbitrary imprisonment
The fact that many detainees were held without charge, under "administrative detention," highlights the structural dimension of injustice in the Israeli prison system in Palestine. The release must not obscure the continuous injustice of these abusive detentions.

- Risk of renewed warfare
Israel has conditioned the continuation of the truce on Hamas's full compliance with the terms of the agreement: return of all hostages, partial disarmament, dismantling of military capabilities. Any delay or refusal could lead to a resumption of operations at any time.

- A first step, not an end point
The return of prisoners is just the starting point. The reconstruction of Gaza, the respect for human rights, and the political future of the territory all remain to be negotiated and implemented. Without firm guarantees, there is a risk that this gesture will be claimed as a final settlement.
