A vote took place in the Corsican Assembly to symbolically recognize the existence of a Palestinian state. France does not currently recognize Palestine.
This is an essentially symbolic vote. The Corsican Assembly, with an autonomist majority, adopted a resolution to recognize the existence of a Palestinian state. The text recognizes "the existence of the State of Palestine, in accordance with prior UN provisions".
The President of the Corsican Assembly, Marie-Antoinette Maupertuis, who initiated this resolution, welcomed the vote, citing "a humanitarian emergency", "a humanist duty", and "support for self-determination and the right of peoples to self-determination".
The text also expresses the wish "that the government of the French Republic recognize the existence of the State of Palestine" and demands a suspension of all arms deliveries to Israel.
The day before, on June 26, the municipal council of Morlaix, in Finistère, had also voted a motion in the municipal council, requesting the recognition of the Palestinian state by France.
Emmanuel Macron had mentioned a possible French recognition "in June"
This symbolic recognition takes place before that of France. In early April, Emmanuel Macron had announced that France could recognize a Palestinian state " in June . This recognition was supposed to take place at a conference co-chaired with Saudi Arabia at the UN. But this large meeting planned for June 18 in New York was postponed due to Israeli strikes on Iran. France therefore does not currently recognize Palestine.
As of April 10, 2025, 148 of the 193 United Nations member states, or three-quarters of them, recognize Palestine as a state.
