Gaza Civil Defense announces 23 deaths in Israeli military operations
The Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip announced on Sunday, June 29, the deaths of 23 people, including children, in strikes or shelling by the Israeli army across the small Palestinian territory devastated by more than twenty months of war. Dozens of injured people were also transported to hospitals after these shellings and airstrikes, said Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the first aid organization.
Given the restrictions imposed on media in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of access on the ground, AFP is unable to independently verify the Civil Defense's figures and claims.
Israeli court postpones Netanyahu's corruption trial hearings
Benyamin Netanyahu's corruption trial will be partially postponed, according to a legal document released Sunday by his party, Likud. The Israeli Prime Minister's lawyer had requested on Thursday the postponement of his hearings, initially scheduled to resume next week, citing "developments in the region and the world" after the war with Iran and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
"Following the explanations given, [...] we partially accept the request and cancel at this stage Benyamin Netanyahu's hearing days scheduled for June 30 and July 2," states the document from the Jerusalem court, which had previously rejected the Israeli Prime Minister's request. The Prime Minister is "obliged to dedicate all his time and energy to managing national, diplomatic, and security issues of the utmost importance," wrote Amit Hadad in a request submitted to the court.
Benyamin Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing during the trial, which has been postponed several times since it opened in May 2020. In a first case, he and his wife are accused of accepting luxury goods worth over $260,000 from billionaires in exchange for political favors. In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of trying to negotiate more favorable coverage in two Israeli media outlets.
