More than 55,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza

Palestinian death toll exceeds 55,000

According to the Associated Press, Gaza's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that 55,104 Palestinians have died in the war between Israel and Hamas, and 127,394 others have been injured. Many others are believed to be buried under rubble or in areas inaccessible to local medical personnel. In its count, the ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but stated that women and children account for more than half of the deaths. For its part, Israel claims to target only Hamas members and attributes civilian deaths to the Islamist organization, accusing group members of hiding among civilians in populated areas.

Over 30 new deaths in Gaza near food distribution center

Gaza's Civil Defense announced that 31 people died and approximately 200 were injured on Wednesday, June 11, while seeking humanitarian aid in the central Palestinian territory—devastated by bombings after more than twenty months of war. "We transported at least 31 martyrs and about 200 injured following Israeli tank and drone fire on thousands of citizens [...] who were going to seek food at the American aid center," said Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal.

Eight dead in attack on building housing Médecins du Monde office

The humanitarian organization Médecins du Monde reported a drone attack the previous day on a building housing one of its offices in Gaza, in which at least eight people were killed. None were members of the NGO. "This attack constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, which protects both the civilian population and humanitarian organizations operating in conflict zones," Médecins du Monde denounced. The office was known to Israeli military authorities. The NGO asserts that it had already "informed the Israeli army of the presence of its office in this building, which is officially declared 'deconflicted,' meaning protected from Israeli military attacks under humanitarian coordination agreements." However, the teams received "no warning" of evacuation before the bombings.
