Three days under bombs, intercepted flotillas, and suspended hopes
The Israeli offensive in Gaza shows no signs of weakening. While diplomatic negotiations continue, several major incidents have marked recent days, highlighting the extremely heavy price paid by civilians.
A flotilla illegally intercepted at sea
On October 8, the Israeli army intercepted a fleet of nine boats from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition in the Mediterranean, approximately 120 nautical miles off Gaza. This convoy was transporting medicines, respiratory equipment, and food supplies intended for already overwhelmed hospitals. 145 activists of various nationalities, including doctors, parliamentarians, and two Israeli citizens, were arrested and transferred to the port of Ashdod. No injuries were reported during the operation, according to authorities. (AP News)
The attack marks a new episode in the confrontation between the naval blockade imposed on Gaza and attempts at maritime solidarity. The Israeli government described the operation as legitimate, stating that the flotilla violated a legal blockade. (Reuters) The humanitarian organization, for its part, denounced an illegal hostage-taking, stating that the participants were peaceful and that their cargo was strictly humanitarian.
The humanitarian workers of the flotilla, including Rima Hassan, accused Israel of physical and psychological mistreatment during their detention.
Persistent bombardments despite calls for a ceasefire
Despite calls from US President Donald Trump to suspend airstrikes, Israeli strikes continued on Gaza. On October 4, dozens of people were killed in nighttime bombardments, according to local health services. (Reuters)
In the northern sectors of Gaza, smoke still rises into the sky above entirely destroyed neighborhoods. The attacks target infrastructure, suspected Hamas tunnels, and civilian homes. (Reuters)
According to health authorities, 19 people were killed in 24 hours during the latest strikes, a tragic figure but lower than the high daily average observed in recent weeks.
Responses at the diplomatic table
Meanwhile, international negotiators are meeting in Egypt to try to seal a peace agreement. Hamas has stated its readiness to engage in a roadmap based on the American proposal, while insisting on adjustments to certain sensitive points, particularly the issue of governance in Gaza. (Reuters)
Donald Trump, for his part, called on Israel to immediately cease strikes to ensure the safety of hostages, while warning that his plan would only be tolerated if its main lines were respected. (AP News)
Israel has not ceased its military operations, emphasizing that it would only apply a partial pause. (Reuters) Prime Minister Netanyahu remains firm: any truce must be conditioned on Israeli security and the disarmament of Hamas.
